Hi Kirsty, I am sorry to hear about Duke .If the kidney failure is advanced I would let Duke eat anything you can get down him.
Dogs with advanced kidney failure can feel nauseous and be reluctant to eat or vomit back what they do eat. Consequently they lose weight rapidly.
I lost a dog with kidney failure. I fed her small frequent meals. In the end I was spoon feeding her Complan with minced meat /fish .

Sounds very much the way it happened with Rupert. I'd been saying to my hubby that he was limping very slightly on and off on his back legs but he couldn't see it, neither could anyone else. Then he suddenly started drinking loads and peeing loads, was constantly licking his lips and he'd wobble a bit when first getting up from lying down. Got him to the vets where they diagnosed kidney failure. His prognosis was actually good according to the vets, they thought that with the right diet and medication he'd be fine.

Maybe he would have been but his legs giving out absolutely terrified him. He was so stressed and frightened by it and after a couple of days he'd reached the point where he refused to move at all, he wouldn't even lift his head up. He just lay on his side wherever we put him and stayed there until we physically moved him.

Really sorry you and Duke are going through this

I agree with you, I lost my fat wee oik Abby to kidney failure last year. I did give her prescription food til near the end then I gave her whatever she would eat. Abby had 6 small meals a day, I also gave her zantac every day as my vet told me that it was more than likely Abby would have stomach ulcers and the zantac would help her keep her food down which it did, I got the first lot from the vet then bought it at the chemist, if you want to give your wee one it check with your vet first that it'll be okay.
I hope Duke will be with you for a good while yet {{hugs}}

Really sorry to hear this, I lost my Yorkie to kidney disease 4 years ago she was only 8. I didn't find out until she went to the vet for her teeth cleaning it showed up in her bloods before they put her under. I may be out of line but we started with the KD food she wasn't too keen and never finnished more than 2 bags so I would have fed her on chicken ect. She also had a heart murmur, I got her from a breeder at the age of 9 months as she was too small to get a good size litter from so I guess she didn't have the best start in life.
I was told my dog could live a full life on meds which she was never put on, Hope all goes well for you hugs to you and your dog xxx
