After looking at some of the photo's on here (such as snorri's) I'd love to live there too.

I was raised in a town between two major cities and so moving to cumbria has been bliss.. We love the countryside, even in winter, but shopping can be a bit lame. (it's a good job I hate shopping)

I'm in the New Forest

I ADORE it here and dont want to move, there are loads of good walks, good dog friendly pubs, and if I want city/nightlife I can go to either Southampton or Bournemouth they are within easy reach by both car or train. If I need to go to London for anything that is a easy train ride as well although it's about 90min.

I'm down towards the beach so I have both the beaches to walk to the dogs on and also the open forest which is one of only a few areas which has a diverse mixture of open heathland/grassy plains to actual forest/wooded areas.

School's are pretty good, the local college's latest OFSTED report was excellent so life is pretty good here

Just if you want to look : http://www.thenewforest.co.uk/

I'm on the southmost island, just across from John o'Groats. It's connected to the main island by four "Churchill Barriers" (built in 1943, to keep German submarines out of the Scapa Flow naval base, after the sinking of HMS "Royal Oak"). These barriers can be scary to cross in bad weather (the sea can get over them), and cars get trashed quite often, but it all adds to the sense of remoteness!

Running the gauntlet of the Barriers on a windy day! (Taken by the ultra-professional method of holding the digicam out of the window and hoping for the best!). You just have to look out for the occasional gliding rock
No MoT certificate needed - you have a Certificate of Seaworthiness, instead.

I only have to walk less than 10 minutes from my house to get into open countryside where its everso peaceful.

There are 5 schools which all have a good reputation. Our town is a bit restricted though due to most of the buildings being listed so they cannot be developed.

Couldnt ever live in a crowded city!

That sounds great Steve - I'll just go and pack my suitcase

Hmmmm, that's a long way to come stalking, just for a Bailey's!

Snorri

P.S. - no Foxies in Orkney, either, except during stalking season

Worcestershire where I have chosen to make my home is a soft and gentle countryside, I don't think I will ever leave it .

From the windows on the east side of the house I look across to Bredon Hill and the edge of the Cotswolds, from the west windows I look up to the Malverns.

If I climb the Malverns there is a magnificent view of the Black mountains and Brecon Beacons over the border in Wales. A mile down the road is the River Severn.

Malvern is famous as a spa town, for Edward Elgar, public schools and the Royal Radar Establishment (now called QinetiQ) where radar was perfected along with many other things among them Magnetic Resonance Imaging used in scanners , infrared night sights and work on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Some views of the hills
