Pet dogs

Just to ask, would you buy a dog from a professional or a responsible breeder and would it matter if it was kc registered or unregistered, not for showing purposes just buying it to be a pet

My two are pets and were brought as pets first and foremost, both well bred dogs and both from responsible breeders.
If they went on to do well in the ring it would have been a bonus
Neither of them are shown and neither are bred from.

I would always go to a responsible, ethical breeder, that health tests and registers pups, even if the dog is to be a pet only

would always get a healthy health tested parents pup, oh we are are not interested inbreeding or showing! dont like professional breeders, as to me that means large kennels outside churning out pups for money, I like my pups bred indoors within the family x

If we ever went for a pup in the future it would be the same story. To me; it's taking a big risk getting a pup from a breeder that doesn/t health test and I would never want to support an irresponsible breeder.

Even the rats I have from a breeder are from a breeder I researched and got to know and who is ethical and responsible. Better for me and better for them as they'll be healthier and have happier lives and I will hopefully have longer with them and they are friendly and well socialised.

If they were a responsible breeder why wouldn't the pups be registered?
The usual reasons for not registering the pups is because they breed from the bitch too frequently or there are endorsements on the parents papers saying not to be bred from. So if that's the case they're not responsible breeders at all, so no I wouldn't encourage them by buying a pup from them.
The three I've had from pups came from responsible, ethical breeders who carried out all the available health checks for their breed and registered the pups. The other 3 are rehomes 2 of which are registered and the other a cross breed and no money changed hands for any of the rehomes.

Most of the registered pedigree pups bred in Hungary are exported all over the world to owners who are prepared to pay OTT prices, which I can't afford.

Both mine are pure breds bought from reputable local breeders and they don't have a pedigree which doesn't worry me in the least as I've no intention of breeding or showing them.

They're both very healthy which considering the multitude of health issues Shar-Pei are prone even in health tested dogs with pedigrees dating back to William the Conquerer is very a real consolation.

I too would question the reason why the pup was not KC registered. I am an ethical breeder who is proud of everything I have bred and want to put my affix on to everything I have produced.

I would be highly suspicious of a breeder that didnt register pups and steer well clear.

My first thought would be that they bred their bitches twice a year to maximise profit but only registered one of the litters so that it looks to the KC that they are complying with the 'one litter per year' guidelines. My second thought would be that it was a 'father/daughter or brother/sister mating which the KC will no longer register anyway - again a profit motive, and then that it was a litter from a bitch who had an exclusion from her original breeder preventing registering her progeny.

There doesnt seem to me to be a genuine reason not to register quality puppies.....
