A police raid on an unlicenced breeder brought some horrors to light and one of the worst was a German Shepherd cowering in a lean-to box too low to stand up in, covered with festering wounds and frozen with fear.
This traumatised dog was taken by a local kennel owner, experienced in saving hopeless cases. She treated his wounds but it became obvious this lad would need long-term care to mend his broken spirit.
He is a great terrified bear of a dog who has no malice in him, not a bad bone in his body, and he repays our care with a gradual, slowly developing trust. Every day brings a tiny change. Today he played with a toy, and it made me smile.

11 year old cross breed adopted from a high kill shelter on her "last day", she was approximately 1 year old at the time. In our years together we've learned competative obedience, rally, agility, flyball, herding, dock diving, and pet therapy. She is still a practicing therapy dog working with incarcerated juveniles once a week.

Picture taken the day we bought him home. This tiny puppy was taken into a vets to be PTS at 9 weeks old because his 3 year old owner didn't want him as he had a hernia. He is the most loving boy you could meet, he loves everyone and doesn't have a mean bone in his body. His life could have been over before it even started.

Dumped, crippled and unable to walk, outside a Shelter in Greece, Bran was on the verge of being PTS when someone tried him on cod liver oil and rest, and he recovered enough to limp around. An elderly British tourist took pity on him and paid for his Pet Passport and transport but while this was being arranged someone put him on Metacam, and he turned into a boisterous, bossy, uncontrollable Hound - so I was given him . He is an old boy now. He loves to snooze in his soft bed, dreaming of sunnier shores I expect, and is unfailingly grateful for his dinners. He was a constant loving companion to my disabled son who passed away recently. I hope they will be re-united in a happier place.

Two years ago I saw the most darling of little faces on a rescue web site .So sad --so bewildered . She had the most expressive ears that stuck out at right angles .A tiny four year old ex -breeding Yorkie who had already had three cesareans. She had passed her usefulness so no longer needed by the greedy breeder she was sent to the rescue. Her only crime was that all the puppies were dead this time ! She was so very scared of everything. She showed her fear by simply crouching down and trying to make herself as small and as invisible as possible. Any sudden movement , any loud noise --she flattened herself to the ground.
She found comfort from my other two small dogs and slowly and surely she watched as they clamoured around me for titbits and the biggest joy was when she took one from my hand too.

A marriage failed and no one wanted to take the responsibility of the dogs. They were left in a shed, fed and watered of course but given no care and attention.
When they were finally rescued this little Yorkie had a very badly gunged up eye. Her other had already been removed somtime previously, the same side as a rather crumpled ear---who knows what happened?
Sadly her other eye also had to be removed BUT she is a happy , adorable much loved girl. She hunts for mice and has no time to feel sorry for herself!

Who could ever imagine that this beautiful girl posing so proudly lived her first four years in a breeding cage. When rescued she was thought to be an apricot colour as her coat was yellow tinged---but it was ingrained urine from the cage above!
She has the most wonderful nature and is now a much loved member of our family living harmoniously with four other dogs.

From a puppy farm to the pound with a prolapse and glaucoma in one eye! Waiting for her seven days to be up and then put to sleep! But a rescue came and despite the obvious cost to them ---they saved her !
Her painful eye was removed , her prolapse sorted!
She became ours--our precious pug.

This girl was rescued with her mum and sister on new years eve 2009. They had been kept in a shed through the winter. They had become to much for the owner, and mum and pups were going to be given to gypies, if we didn't collect there and then. Animal lifeline UK rallied round found rescue back up, a lady to pick them up and meet me so I could bring them to my home. Where they would stay to be spayed vacs wormed and de-flead, before carrying on there journey. This little girl stole my heart and ended up being my soul mate. She has her issues with other some dogs but we are working through that with a behaviourist. I just thank ALUK for helping these dog and bringing her my way, and Gray matter for coming forward as the rescue.
