A police raid on an unlicenced breeder brought some horrors to light and one of the worst was a German Shepherd cowering in a lean-to box too low to stand up in, covered with festering wounds and frozen with fear.
So badly injured that he needed special care, this traumatised dog was thankfully taken by a local kennel owner, experienced in saving hopeless cases. She treated his wounds and tried to bring him out of his private hell, but though the injuries healed, it became obvious this lad would need long-term care to mend his broken spirit.
As winter came on, it became obvious to all that this poor boy needed a home, and I took him in because he needed us.
He is a gentle delight. A great terrified bear of a dog who has never ever shown aggression, not even when we had to treat an abscess. He has no malice in him, not a bad bone in his body, and he repays our care with a gradual, slowly developing trust. Every day brings a tiny change. Today he played with a toy, and it made me smile.
