How many placings should we have?

Traditionally we've always done 1st-6th place for each class, with specials at the judge's descretion.

However, as some of the classes are smaller than we've had previously, I don't think we should always give out up to 6th place.

I think my preference is to leave it to the class judge's discretion, but I'd like to hear everyone else's views.

For the 'varying' it could something like:
1st-3rd for clases with 10 or less entries
1st-4th for classes with 11-20 entries
1st-6th for classe with 20+ entries.

ETA:

My main concern is where there is a class of say 7 entries. In that case 6 would get placed and 1 woudn't. As its supposed to be a fun show, I just thought it wouldn't be very nice to be the one person who's dog doesn't get placed.

I quite like the idea of 1-3rd only + specials. I think it puts more into those top 3.

Have gone for Judges discretion - but maybe with a top limit of 8th or 10th?

I think they should all get ribbons as it is so hard picking 6 places
To be fair I think the number of entries should determine it so the judge doesn't have the extra pressure of deciding if dogs should be placed or not

In agility it's placing to 10% of the class, some of the small/medium classes only have 20-30 dogs, where the large dog classes have 200-300 dogs (not that these virtual classes are anything like doing agility )

I don`t think it matters if there are few entries - it seems a bit unfair to say that a percentage of dogs are going to`fail`. I`d rather say that 6 are going to catch the judges eye.

If you are following the rules as in affiliated / KC, then placing only go up to 5..1st 2nd 3r 4th and VHC (5TH)

But personally why change what is already working.

Leave it as it is it is hard enough choosing 6 and specials with out having to limit it to only 3.

Thanks for the feedback.

The reason for thinking of the change is that when there is a class with only a few entries it seems somehow worse to have everyone in the class apart from 1 or 2 getting a rosette. (e.g. with 7 entries, 6 would get placed and 1 wouldn't).

Whilst I realise that not everyone can be a winner, I know that if I was entering, I wouldn't really like to be singled out not to get a rosette. Perhaps that's just me though.
