Smoking Ban

Smoking being banned in public places...
For or Against??

I have no problem with people smoking, but i dont feel its fair for non smokers, breathing the smoke when all they want is to have a nice night out.

Under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 employers have a legal "duty of care" to protect their employees and others from anything that may cause a risk to their health and safety. Passive smoking is a big topic with the HSE at the moment and if you as an employee ask that you do not wish to be subjected to work in such conditions, the employer has to legally act.
The problem is how they protect employees in such places as pubs or restaurants ?
The ban is the easy option although at the risk of losing customers who smoke.

To us who dont smoke there doesnt seem to be a problem with a blanket ban -
but I dont think heavy smokers will view it in the same light

I don't like smoking - I especially don't like it when people smoke in restaurants in mixed areas and I would stay away from somewhere that allows it. However, its an addiction and if someone wants to smoke in the same was as I like a few (ten) glasses of red then they should be allowed to, providing it doesn't interfere with those of us who don't want to breathe it in.

I don't like the smell of it on my clothes - as an ex smoker (years ago) I am still very sensitive to the smell of it and it makes me feel sick.

its a toughie, but perhaps a ban is a good idea - would be good tho if say a percentage of pubs clubs restaurants etc be allowed a 'smokers' licence? that way the majority of places will be smoke free with a few 'well known' ones that allowed it (so the non smokers can steer clear).

i agree chloe, but trouble is it does interfere, because people smoke in pubs and restuarants.

It makes me laugh the way they have those " no smoking beyond this point" signs, so the smoke just stops at the sign and turns around, or not!

brilliant idea azz! :smt023

What I mean is that smokers could get their own dedicated areas - but make it more enclosed than it is now by putting a partition up or use a separate room - as opposed to just half and half because the smoke still wafts over.

The problem then is that those smokers who use those enclosed areas then take their kids in and smoke over them - makes me cringe
