What removes glue?

Hi all,
When moved into our current house, the people before left the carpets down in both toilets, pet hate of mine don't like carpets in toilets or bathrooms.
So anyway took them up cos they were dirty and begining to smell, due to the boys not aiming properly.
But the person here before used glue to stick them down, and i need something to get it off the vinyl flooring, any ideas?

Hmmmmm, a sticky problem! (It's OK, I've done the groaning already!)

It may depend on the glue used - you could try lifting a little bit, then playing a hair-dryer over the exposed glue. It MIGHT soften it enough to allow you to pull the carpet up bit by bit, without raising your household heating bill to astronomic proportions?

Or try your local carpet supplier, they might have some ideas about commercial solvents (nail polish remover may well do the job, but you'd need an awful lot of it!).

Mrs S thought about petrol - but immediately pointed out that it might not be the safest thing, and it would smell for ages.

Yep, it's Blue Peter, but no sticky-backed plastic (or is that not the problem?)
