Atopica & diabetes

My cairn terrier has been on Atopica for about 3 months due to chronic skin conditions. After about 2 months she was diagnosed with mellitus diabetes. Does anyone know if Atopica can be a result of diabetes?

Hi there

Skin problems are well known in white coated breeds (including Westies and my own breed - English Setters). It happens as a result of a defective immune system. Diabetes is also an auto-immune mediated disease.

So the problem is not the Atopica medication, but the dogs immune system.

Many problems are auto immune mediated - including hypothyroidism - which I personally suffer from. In dogs this affects the coat and skin.

I think it is more likely to be the immune status of your dog that is the problem. Many of us have to cope with these things. Please dont stop giving the medication. Its a case of balancing out the problems.

Hope your dog is feeling much better soon.
