Archie's training

I cant decide how to do his training, its a bit more difficult with him not being the tiny puppy, as he is just so strong!

to be fair to him, his recall is pretty spot on, I can let him off and he comes back as soon as i shout him. it just takes him a bit longer because he ranges alot further away than the cresteds

his lead manners are appalling. he pulls like a train, and this is the first thing i want to tackle. Im thinking of trying the 300 step method i got recommended with asbo. i introduced the clicker this morning so he knows that the clicker means food im going to try it a bit this afternoon. but i may have to look into get a halter for him, so can anyone recommend a good one?

he jumps up when he gets excited, but thats not too bad, we are working on it and hes calming down. i have to remember he is a puppy, just a big one!

the other issue we seem to have is asbo. I dont know if asbo is jealous of him, or intimidated by him, but he doesnt seem to be settling with him at all. i know its early days yet, ive only had him 2 days.. but any advice and tips would be great. asbo is fine with him when he is asleep for instance they were all snoozing together on my bed yesterday. its just when hes on the move, asbo tends to move out of the way, and he growls and snaps at him. archie doesnt retaliate he just sort of looks at him as if to say "what did i do?" i imagine they will settle with each other eventually but anything i can do in the mean time would be great!

Back to basics and train him like you did your others. Big dog, little dog, the training is the same. However, as you have noticed, he does range out further and that's what pointers do.

I'm afraid I can't help you with the halti as I haven't used one for years, and there really was only the halti on the market then.

I'm sure they will all settle down in time. As you said, it's only been 2 days. You are the only one who can really say whether there is more in it than that though.

thanks for the reply. i dont mind that he ranges out further, he comes back when i call him and thats all that matters. he doesnt seem bothered by livestock, i do put him on where i know sheep are going to be though, just incase.

hes meeting the shire on thursday to see how he gets on with them seeing as i have a big show next thursday and would rather take him with me than leave him with nana to deal with (although she seems quite smitten with him)

i think at the minute with asbo hes just wary because he is so big, will give him a bit longer to settle yet as i know it does take time. unfortunately if they cant ever get on then archie will have to go, because asbo was here first. (of course i am hoping it doesnt come to this!)

Second that, the leather dogmatic headcollar worked a treat with my GSD when she was learning to walk nicely on the lead.

My favourite Head Halter is the Black Dog design. But not all designs suit all dogs (or owners) so you pays your money and takes your choice.
