Blast From The Past Rough and Smooth Collie

Please don't laugh but this is me many many years ago with one of our Rough Collies Barbie. She was our foundation bitch. I can't remember for sure but I think she had just won RBIS here, unfortunatly nothing was written on the back of the photo. She was the good old fashioned type of Rough Collie.

I may have posted this once before but this was one of my Smooth Collies when she was 6 months old at her first ever show. She won BOB that day.

Another of my smoth collies that became a champion

Fantastic pics!

Much prefer the face on your Rough compared to what many look like now. My mum has a friend with one and his face is shaped like a Borzoi's and looks quite extreme. Yours is much softer.

Thankyou. My girl did have an excellent head and movement which was always commented on by the judges. She was bigger than what they are these days though, so nowadays wouldn't win a thing.

Thank you for posting those pics xx

Lovely to see!

Beautiful dogs.

I think Whisper has a much more 'classic' facial shape and muzzle than a lot of the Rough's I've seen on various breeders' websites. But maybe I'm just biased!

Breeding dogs with narrower and narrower skulls has resulted in a smaller brain I think which is a shame in the Rough.

They used to be much more popular than they are now and as you say much bigger.

They are much too sensitive for me and have FAR too much hair but they are certainly glamourpusses.

I often wonder why the smooth is not more popular.

Lovely - you look great too
The rough collie used to look SO much better years ago - I do hope they head back that way - not holding my breath

Just realised i have never actually seen a smooth collie in the flesh
Stupid question - are they a seperate 'breed' or can you get rough and smooth in the same litters - or could you and we have selected for one or the other?

Don't think I have seen a pic of whisper, you must post some.

They started to breed them smaller and smaller with a thicker and thicker coat and half of them couldn't move to save their lives, somehow this new fad saw many dogs being made into champions and so the trend began. Main ones off the top of my head that I remember starting it all was Ch Aberthorne Arrester, CH Myberns Minstrel.
They never used to be overly sensitive dogs, I can't comment for the way they are now though, they were very laid back and easy going dogs.
Somebody once said to me the smooth collies look like mongrels, maybe thats why. Smooths were a little more lively I found than the roughs.
