The retired police dog....

MY DOG DAYS (Taken from the Sunday Express and written by Martin Newell following the news that Nottinghamshire's police dogs are to recieve a pension on their retirement)

On reaching my retirement
as canine on the force
They offered me a pension
and civvy rehab course.
My days deterring villains
and sniffing missions done,
An ordinary dog's life
was what I'd found I'd won.
If times are rather quieter
Than once they used to be
I get to nose in binbags,
and wet a post or three,
and the type of sports which
normal sorts of dogs all tend to do,
running off in woodland
to roll in fox's poo.
Insisting that I'm bursting
When it's hacking down with rain,
Then settling on the sofa
once let in again.
There's also pointless barking
Which I mostly do at night
Pretending that there's something there
When really, it's all right.
In fact, now in retirement
the cliche comes to mind,
That I'm busier than ever
Is what I seem to find.

And some are complaining about this money for retired police dogs. Why? They gave most of their lives to the service and they didn't CHOOSE to do so. And some of the families and handlers who kept them on afterwards have had to face the high vet bills associated with ageing dogs.

They deserve it - it's not much money anyway.

I totally agree Tang - it is hardly a fortune that they are allocating for each retired dog, and given the furore when retired dogs end up having to be destroyed, I would have thought that this small step to help would be welcomed.
