Opinions Please

Just wondering what you lot thought about line breeding and where do you draw the line and call it inbreeding?

Am not an expert ....the last 2 litter i have bred have been total outcross bring to seperate lines together ... many of todays cavaliers are the result of line breeding but we also have a high amount of dogs in the breed with SYRINOGMYELIA...... If i were to line breed which i'm not i would look back on my bitches lines to find perhaps cousins at least 3 gens back with either same sire OR dam............I persoanlly think daughter to father or grandfather would be inbreeding..BUT i am not a expert

Line breeding is the use of a specific dog on a pedigree, the reasonig behind it is that the more times said dog appears on the pedigree, the more likely it is that any resultant pups will have his desired traits. It does not seem to matter that the bitches are unrelated, infact that is probably preferable. You would work off the dogs line until something better is produced then start the process again.

Anne
I dont profess to know enough about genetics and breeding to offer any valuable information

I have heard though that if you know the line inside out it can be a good thing- otherwise you can double up on faults?

I asked because it really surprised me how many breeder actually breed as close as mother/son father/daughter etc. maybe its just me but as I would never breed this close and I thought it was frowned upon in the dog world, but apparently not its really common.

I would have thought you really have to know your stuff to breed that close Grandsire to grand daughter for example is quite acceptable I think

I think if you love your dogs like we all do, you think of them as we do humans and it just seems ethically wrong.
