Just an update and to answer my own question "Are all Rescue Centre's like this?" NO they thankfully are not. I have since visited an RSPCA centre near Aylesbury which was friendly and well-kept appearance. And after chating to volunteers at a roadshow I now help out for the retired greyhound trust and love it.

Thanks to all those people who willed me on to keep looking. I'm glad I did as the joy these gentle giants give you simply can't buy and I sure feel like we all make a difference, everybody is appreciated too.
