I watched the video, thank you so much for posting it. I then spent the rest of the day watching the rest of his rescues It's been hours and hours. I then went on to watch others and one called 'In memory of those left to die'

I never knew that at hurricane Katrina 50,000 - 100,000 dogs were left behind. There are images of them on roofs and in the water. Apparently 80-90% - 40,000-90,000 died and only 10,000-15,000 were rescued but only 2,000-3,000 were reunited with their families.

I don't know of the circumstances during the hurricane, whether the people being rescued weren't allowed to take their dogs but I cannot imagine me ever leaving Lana behind on her own. It looked like some of the dogs were chained up, some had ribs showing with starvation and it was just so, so sad that these faithful family members were simply left behind to die.

<edited to add>Just been googling and as I thought they were forced to leave them behind when being evacuated.

Sadly, they were forced to leave their pets behind. Even those that refused to leave pets initially were threatened with arrest if they didn't comply. There was a huge effort to rescue to Katrina pets, but there were so many pets and so many barriers to rescue. Priority was given to the people (and rightly so) so by the time rescue groups were allowed in, many had sadly passed away. This was one circumstance where microchipping and a central registry could have reunited so many pets and owners. Also really wished we had a central site like DogLost in the US. An owners searching for a rescued pet had hundreds of rescue groups to contact as they were shipped out all over the country. It wasn't a perfect system by a stretch, but the rescuers are to be commended for doing what many wouldn't dream of doing, and risking their own lives in the process (disease was rampant in the flooded areas)

muttzrule, yes I googled and read more about the hurricane and people not being allowed to take their pets and one who said a policeman shot hers dead. I have to say if it was me with Lana I would rather she had been quickly killed by a bullet to save her going through the hurricane on her own. So, so sad about the animals and I read and watched videos about the rescue, all those volunteers going in afterwards. It's totally heartbreaking.

I believe not all the people got away either and if they had allowed the animals it would have held everything up so the ones in charge would rather save the people. It must have been sheer hell for everyone involved so no accusations or judgement from me it was just that I hadn't realised about the animals before and the thought of leaving Lana all on her own to sit through a hurricane makes me feel sick and it must have been like that for the owners and also those having to enforce the rules. Such a horrendous thing and totally unimaginable for anyone not involved.

Kirsty, I watched every video there was. None of the animals were in any way viscious and once they were caught you could see how much they relished getting affection. I sat watching different videos until about 3am only having breaks to feed or walk Lana The videos were heartbreaking but happy too. I take my hat off to Eldad who seemed to have no fear of the dogs and quickly won them over.

I didn't know there was anything like that on youtube so thanks again gedor99 for posting.
