How can I stop my dog pulling when walking with others?

I have a beautiful 1 yr old flatcoat. He has already gained his silver good citizen award (so not stupid and quite capable!) has great recall, meaning most walks are across the field and off lead. When I road walk he walks loose lead if it is just me and him. However, I walk alot with friends and their dogs and he pulls like mad, I don't think it's a dominance thing (but could be wrong) as most of the other dogs we socialise with are also males and older, he has not challenged any of them before. Off lead again he is great and interacts with them with no problems. I'm due to have surgery shortly on my wrist and it worries me that I will not be able to walk him and have to rely on my OH.
Any ideas for how to stop this happening? I have tried the stopping every time there is tension in the lead but this is no fun when out in a group and doesn't seem to work anyway. I would be very grateful for any suggestions!! Thank you.

It's not dominance, (this is an old view ) but he may well be excited/competitive with other dogs around!

May be a good idea to invest in a stop/pull harness, halti harness or similar as that may be the easiest and fastest way to go, considering your wrist

Also it may be easier to walk ahead of the others if they will let you!

Thanks for that. My friends are all very understanding and if he needs to go in front I'm sure they will be more than willing to let him, will give it a go at the weekend. Will a halti need to be permanent or just until he 'grasps' what I'm after?

I find that if taken off, the dogs just go back to pulling usually but, I'd say keep using them - why not?

The other way is to do lots of training but it will take time.

Lotsa luck!
