Taking a dog into a Puppies home

Is that a problem? We're off to a BBQ later at my brothers, and wanted to take Marco. My brother has been told by his OH that Marco can't come because it would not be good to bring him onto the puppy's territory while he's so young. Their Labrador pup is about 13-14 weeks old I think and finished his jabs a couple of weeks ago. But it's the territory thing that she seems to think is a problem.

I'm just wondering whether she's been bloody awkward (wouldn't surprise me), or if there's some truth in it? I would've thought it would've been good for the pup to meet other dogs? But is it a problem if on his own house?

I would just like the reality so can at least advise my brother, as his OH has a tendency to steam roller him as she's a know it all.

Thanks,
David

Buy them a copy of The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson.
Email them links to these sites:

tell them that they really really need to socialise their youngster NOW.
And maybe point out that the house doesn`t actually belong to the dog?

i wouldnt imagine a 13 week old puppy would be very territorial over a house and garden anyway...

Thanks for those replies so far.
So once he's had his vaccinations there is no time when this should be an issue, young or old? I think she said maybe when he's a little older. Kinda goes against the 'socialisation' stuff I'd read, but then we haven't had a pup.

The sooner the pup gets used to other dogs coming and going in his house and garden the less of a problem it will be in my experience.

Hi David I would want my puppy to experience other dogs in his home. Does you brother have a secure garden, if so this would be the best place to introduce the two and they will probably chase each other around like mad and have a great time

My dog trainer, who does not train dogs but their owners, will always bring one of his own dogs round after he has been a few times if wanted. Pereg was used to my Little One of course but LO died just after David had been here for the first time, so by the time he brought Mango round Pereg was convinced the bungalow was hers and hers alone.

She did a mini snarl at Mango. Mango [a rather large, very fluffy pale cream Lab X] did a bored snarl back - and they were fine after that.

I would say it's great socialisation for the pup to meet another dog in his home.. and great for Marco too - win win
They shouldn't want their dog to become territorial anyway - and waiting would make things worse not better I would have thought? Pups are usually easy going...

I'll have a quiet word in my brother's ear later, but won't push the point with her today, just not worth it.

I love what CLAIRE&DAISY said: it's not the pup's territory! Well put

If the pup has had his vaccinations then there is NO reason on earth why Marco should not go with you.

One thing to remember: dogs on leads are often tense around other dogs so as someone said, if Marco does go, let him off leash in the garden, with the pup then hopefully you can watch them having a wonderful time together

Your sister in law is not being sensible; she should let her dog have as many positive encounters with other dogs as possible!
