Awww I know what you mean...have you tried white vinegar diluted in a bucket? it will smell for a short while but when the odour of vinegar has gone (hopefully) the doggy smells will have gone.
Try bicarbnate of soda on the carpet stain, sprinkle the powder on the stain and work in with a sponge soaked in warm water, then rinse.

Dont use bleach products as they will attract more urinating!
If all else fails, get wooden flooring

I have a bissell pro heat 7920 carpet shampooer which has probably been superceded now as I've had it quite a while. It works a treat on stains and smells etc, it leaves the carpets damp though so you would need to restrict their access to certain rooms until the carpets are dry or let it dry overnight. They do a pet odour eliminator shampoo too which smells good. I find it very handy for sucking up any spills or accidents the minute they happen.

Carpet Tiles - lift and clean/ replace as you go.
Laminate floors
Machine washable rugs.
problem solved.
I found the underlay was retaining the smell - you may have to replace it if you`re going to keep your carpet.

Shaving foam is a great trick for stubborn stains.. trust me, I didn't believe it at first either, but now i have very clean patches...

I swear by Febreeze for the general smell as well though. The room spray for general use and the fabric spray used over any patch I have cleaned.

I'm currently smelling festive courtesy of the glade flameless candle

I dont use frebreeze as it can cause hair loss in dogs/cats xx
