He's not a lab!

Nor is he good with strange people!!!

I'm at my parents atm and a man has just come in to look at the electric as they're having work done on the street. Anyway - I went to see where Louie was and told the man "ignore the brown one, he's not too good with strangers" (Sadie is here too hence the brown one) the reply I got was
"What the lab?"

"He's not a lab, he's a cross" (me being a bit pedantic)

I'm fed up of people automatically assuming that because he looks like a Lab, he'll be as friendly as the rest. He isn't he has an aloofness of him and doesn't like being approached by people who just think he's a Lab and therefore can just reach straight out and stroke his head.

I did ask him to ignore him and that he wasn't very good with strangers - so why do people feel the need to question me - he's the 3rd person in as many weeks to make an assumption.

Yes it's a rant and I don't want it to turn into anything - just needed a rant

As annoying as it is I would just smile and nod, being the owner or a GSP that has his tail and is mainly white with speckles I just take the "oh what a pretty dalmatian" comments and laugh to myself.
Also had a red cattle dog which I over hear a guy say it was a cross breed not a pedigree to his mate, that or people asking if he was a fox! lol

And some Labs don't like people and are not friendly, I would just say yeah that one stay away from him. But at the same time I do get your need for a rant at times too.

The woman at the bus stop was the worst. No wait, the lady with the child - just because the Hollywood labs and family labs are good with children - doesn't mean my mutt is! And it's not a question of socialisation - at 8 weeks he was around Skeggy market (in arms of course) and he went to the Airsofting shop where all these men walked in and out etc, then theres the shows we go to, BBQ's we had. He just would rather be left alone or left for him to suss out..

Do you want to swap dogs? Seeing as I have the man eating Alsatian that requires people to step into traffic with their children to avoid. Even though he's a complete tart. Or maybe that just happens around here.

That did just make me laugh!!!!

Oh and when I first got my Dalmatian cross Pyrenese I was asked if she was a pointer, yet no one has asked if the pointer is actually a pointer, although I have been asked if the older cross is the pedigrees mum, lol

I'm not sure what's so annoying about it though?

Take it as a compliment that he is appealing and people want to stroke him

With the massive variety in pet and random bred Labs I am not surprised that everyone thinks he is a Lab - I would probably make the same assumption - he is as Lab like (physically) as a lot of the Labs I see round here Is his coat Labby to the touch - it looks shorter in pics (which seems illogical LOL) but looks like it would feel nicer than a Lab

(Much as I love Labbbies - I don't really like the feel of them - except their ears!!)

Well to be fair, he does look like a Lab. If he didn't have the white on his chest, 99% of people probably wouldn't think he was anything but. And the majority of Labs ARE very people friendly and being "aloof" isn't a breed trait at all, so it isn't surprising that people are receptive to him.

Rightly or wrongly, the average person is probably going to assume that a dog is going to have an atypical temperament for the breed.

Jed is wary of strangers and also quite protective of the property so when we get anybody like a tradesman come, the dogs get put in the garden or shut in another room. I'd rather that than risk a visitor getting nipped or growled at.

When I lived with my ex, we always had people visiting because they would bring their cars round and Mick would insist on just bringing them into the garden or kitchen whilst the dogs were there. Of course they would try and stroke the dogs but Jed would get very jumpy and uncomfortable so I used to take control by removing the dogs from that situation. Jed even snapped at somebody who kept following him round the garden as he tried to get away and cornered him so i'd never feel safe mixing unknown visitors with wary dogs.
