Dogs and horses...

obviously most dogs can be good around horses if they are brought up around them but are there certain breeds that are better around horses, i know the dalmatian would be because of what is was bred for, but are there are other breeds, and if so what would you say they are?

all suggestions and reasons why are greatly appreciated, any pictures too.

i have a new hobby which involves some rather big horses

Aww Well im sure you're going to love every minute of it
Koda was brought up around our horses (malamute x) and hes always from young learnt to not get behind them or too close, as alot of the horses up the yard will chase the dogs and i have seen a horse kick a young rottie before and hurt it quite badly....

I think ANY dog if brought up from young are ok with horses-i always taught Koda like i taught my younger sister that you should be wary around horses, i never wanted him to be one of these dogs that runs in and out of their legs etc, my horses wouldn't of minded that, but others would've done some damage, so just bare that in mind if you take your doggies up and introduce slowly....

i probably have lots of pics il have a look for u! x

All breeds will be OK round horses if they are trained to be. Introduce them on-lead, reward for calmness.
I`ve never had a problem when riding apart from when people hadn`t trained their dogs properly and they chased the horses. I had an Afghan Hound gallop along with us once, matching our pace. He was obviously enjoying it, but his rapidly disappearing owner wasn`t!

Well you usually have a terrier or two around stables, because of the rats.

Kiba is good around horses now. When he was young he used to go right up to them and follow them, when he was about 4 months old we took him to the New Forest where he met his first horse. This horse wasn't very old and it chased Kiba, then Kiba chased it and they ran around in circles having a great time! Unfortunately after that Kiba thought that all horses were 'friends' and would want to play with him. He learnt the hard way and got kicked in the head at 6 months old. Since then he's definitely giving them the respect and space they deserve.

I assume foxhounds would be good around horses. Dogs trained for the hunt.

A lot of people with horses tend to have border collies (me included) my BC is really good with the horses and only ever tried to herd them a couple of times before they put a stop to it She is 15 now but happily kept pace with the horses till she was about 13.
My retriever x has been bought up with horses and he still occasionally comes for rides with me (he is 11).
My pup is a Dalmatian, I was really interested in Dalis because they were bred to be with horses and as I wanted my dog to come on rides with me,I didn't want a dog with too much in built prey drive (like a hound might have) and ****** off into the countryside and get shot by a farmer.
My boy has a natural love of horses and I have not yet introduced him off the lead to them as he is still a bit squash-able.

My Boxers are very good with horses, but that's cos they have been brought up around them...

Given the chance, Max, our eldest, will run next to a galloping horse, like a hound or carriage dog! He loves it!

Obviously, I'd never let him do this willy-nilly - we will often go out with my friends horse round a cross country course and let Max pace the horse for a few miles.

My boy was riding with me last night he lurves the horses and likes to be infront and pretend they are chasing him. They arent so keen on his crop surfing though and springbok impressions were frowned upon by jackson who repeatedly barged the poor pony i was leading, when my boy appeared in a vertical launch above the corn! He knows to keep out of the way and them being hunters they are used to dafty beasts hurtling around. He comes out only when we go straight out the back onto land NEVER on the road but my friends labs are v road savvy and ahppily trot on behind (the JRT is escorted via rucksack till we are clear of roads - she is a beggar for nipping heels and being generally OTT when we set off!) )
