Cameras for taking good doggy photos

My trusty little camera died a death on the last day of my holiday It was five years old though. Time for a new one. While away I realised that it was terrible at handling low light conditions, and bleached out in bright sunshine.

90% of the time I use it, I'm taking photos of Cain or other dogs. I not going to get an SLR much as I would love one, as I'm more likely to carry around a small camera. I'm just looking to get a pocket sized camera that I can take out on dog walks. I'm currently borrowing one as it's shutter speed is so slow that Cain's eyes are always shut as he blinks in the flash.

Any recommendations? Needs to be able to handle high and low light conditions, and a super fast shutter speed to capture moving animals. Undecided on price, I am thinking of getting a really good one on credit if I can't pay it all in one go.

Considering the new Nikon 1. Seems like a good compromise between pocket camera and SLR.

Any suggestions appreciated

just bought my dad one for christmas, it has a damn good zoom on it and also promoted how good it is for taking pictures of pets as there is a setting in which it waits to snap until the animal is looking directly at the lens not away. It's not came yet should be here tomorrow or tuesday, but the camera is an Olympus SP-810 UZ

It was one of the closest i could find to an SLR, and has an amazing zoom on it which is actually stronger than my brothers Olympus SLR wildlife lens he got last year for his camera.

As soon as dad tries it out christmas time i will let you know, but i played with one in currys and was mighty impressed. It does not look as pretty as the Nikkon but the price tag is very reasonable! Just bought mine from a site called pixmania.com as i got a leather case free with it.

Check out the new Nikon 1: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-J1-Com...4420995&sr=1-2

Or at that price you could even get a DSLR: http://www.calumetphoto.co.uk/eng/product//355-145B

Thanks for that Azz, I did mention in my first post that I had my eye on the Nikon 1. So now I'm torn between the two recommendations. Problem is I don't really know much about cameras

I quite like the Nikon 1

Check out some photos taken with it (and a couple of G12 ones at the end)

Nikon 1

Nikon 1 J1
1/125s f/4.0 at 13.1mm iso100

Nikon 1 J1
1/500s f/4.0 at 45.9mm iso100

Nikon 1 J1
1/100s f/6.3 at 59.4mm iso100

Nikon 1 J1
1/125s f/5.3 at 89.9mm iso400

Canon G12

Canon Powershot G12
1/1000s f/2.8 at 6.1mm iso200

Canon Powershot G12
1/1600s f/4.5 at 8.1mm iso400

All from pbase.com - the first thing I do when researching a new camera is the sample pics posted on pbase - to get an idea of the image quality.

Out of the two I would personally go for the Nikon, it's a newer better camera.
