Different diets for dogs

What do you think are the most common diet types for dogs?

Here's a few - can you think of any more, that are fairly common?
  • Common Kibble / pet food - bought from retailer or pet-shop
  • Specialist Kibble / pet food - bought from retailer or pet-shop or online (eg grain-free)
  • RAW feeding
  • Natural home-cooked food

Can you think of any more?

I'm wondering whether we should create sub-sections for the most common types.

Ours are fed on Arden Grange (kibble) and Naturediet (meat) but they also get any leftovers we have (and there are always some leftovers) and each have an apple and a carrot a day as well. All fruit etc is organic as is any meat and veg they have in leftovers. They also get natural yoghurt regularly.I like them to get a variety of food to be honest. The Arden Grange and Naturediet are the constants in their diet I suppose...but it depends what leftovers we have as to how much they get of them.

For what it's worth I don't think any one way of feeding is right for all dogs, we find this is best for ours, they have the right sort of energy levels and their coats etc are in fab condition. I have no problem trying to get them to eat...ever...and they clear their bowls.

I would say:
  • Good quality dry
  • Poor quality dry
  • Good quality wet
  • Poor quality wet
  • Home cooked
  • BARF/Prey model/Raw fed

That's all I can think of tbh.....

I try to do a raw diet with no grains, more specifically a glutamate, aspartate restricted diet as much as possible because of the epilepsy. Things have improved - I'd be cautious to state it was down to diet alone but I'm not going to change it now.

Mine are fed dry working dog food (cheap). I also mix in some tinned.

However am considering changing to ram (see pet mince post) or home cooked.

Most clients I see feed commercial dry dog food.

I feed a combination!!
Jamie gets Arden Grange Sensitive or JWB cereal free, with Natures Harvest/tin sardines or pilchards or homecooked fish/lamb mince etc... He stopped enjoying or tolerating raw, so his move to 'commercial' and home made is permenant now. I also feed the best I can afford, I know AG is ethical as well and he loves it!

Deacon, Codee and Honey get either the above or human grade raw meats or green tripe...

How about 'Special Diets'? I'm thinking of dogs with health problems.

Ditto this - was thinking maybe prescription diets, along with diets for pancreatitis, EPI, dogs with allergies, etc. Wonder if vegetarian/vegan diets would have a place here too.
Also perhaps a section for treats? Homemade treat recipes, Kong filler ideas, suggestions for long lasting chews, etc.
