Swallowed chunk of plastic

Cain just swallowed a chunk of plastic it was off a Sporn Marrowbone, like a Nylabone but with an edible strip down the middle. Unfortunately as the dog gets nearer the middle the plastic gets thinner, unlike proper Nylabones. I was watching him chew thinking "hmmm might need to throw that out soon". One second the chunk was on the bone, the next it wad gone. It came off and he must have just swallowed it as I can't find it anywhere. Needless to say the rest of the bone is in the bin.

It's approx the size of a cocktail sausage. I'm hoping he might throw it up. I tried to get him to throw up but playing high energy games to make him run but it didn't work. I can't think of any food to feed him that would have that effect. Called the vet for advice who said wait an see if it passes through in 1-3 days and feed him oily food. I really hope it doesn't get stuck. So I'll be siefting through poo for the next few days.

Any advice to help him pass it/throw it up.

I would just go with the vets idea of oily food. Not sure what diet he is on but tins of oily fish are good.....

Thanks He's on raw and had coincdently just eat a whole mackerel for dinner about two hours earlier! I've now fed him a small tin of sardines in sunflower oil, including all the oil in the tin

would liver softening his poo help as it's a rather largish chunk to pass without hard poo?

Cain hasn't thrown it up over night nor did his pass it in his morning poo I don't like to leave him while I go to work, what if he tries to throw it up and it gets stuck in his throat I've going into work late but I have to leave soon, my dog trainer will be in to walk him at midday, but then he'll be alone again until 4.30 when my mum gets home.

I know loads of dogs swallow all sorts of things and it passes through just fine but it still worries me, I wish he'd just pass it.

I put oil on his tripe this morning. He ate fine and kept it down and it totally fine in himself.

Hope Cain is OK. Being a larger dog will help I guess, his guts should be a bit wider than a smaller breed. If it's any consolation, my old GSD ate almost a whole small tub of Celebrations one night over the Christmas period - she didn't have any adverse effects from the chocolate but she was pooing out multicoloured, wrapper-filled poos for a while

I hope Cain is ok, if its any help Ben has chewed bits of Nylabones (none as big as Cains bit) and he started to wretch etc and then bring up bile with the plastic in it but I am sure it was about a few hours after swallowing it.

I am not sure if this would work but when Ben ate a whole big bar of DARK chocolate the vet said to feed him a teaspoon of English mustard as this would make him sick, ovbiously that is too late now but it may help someone reading this thread in the future.

Hope Cain passes it soon

Thanks Karly. Dog trainer says he's fine in himself, did a normal poo but no sign of it yet!!!

I've been told 'comforting' tales of dogs who ate Christmas baubles and pooed glitter and another about a dog that ate and passed a whole sock!!! so I'll keep watching and waiting....

Hope he is ok. Sure he will be.

Friend of mine's dog ate a plastic lighter (well swallowed it). She didn't realise until it came out the other end, intact and apparently still working (she said they used gloves to test it)!!

Blimey!

Well nothing yet. I'm starting to have doubts in my head if he did actually swallow anything as I didn't actually see if However there is definately a missing chunk of plastic so I think he must have swallowed it...

He is eating really well, pooing without issue and is happy and active so if it is in there then I'm confident that it's not causing an obstruction. And i think the choking risk has gone as I doubt he'll throw it up now. No, I think it'll have to go the long way....!

I poo sifted all day yesterday, he did about five! His average is two, so I'm guessing maybe the oil is moving things through? There were little hard chunks in some of it which were bone and the only bone he's had was half a pigs trotter a few hours before he ate the plastic so hopefully the plastic is behind and will appears today.

So there you go, a 24 hr log of my dogs poo....don't you just love my little stories
