Really annoying clue in dog crossword!!

I'm stuck on this:

'Small chinese dog resembling....'

and the letters are _A_P_

The cryptic clue alternative is 'Chap patiently accommodates this breed.'

It makes no sense to me whatsoever. Is it a breed, or a normal word? I keep thinking 'happy' becuse that word can be found in 'chap patiently'. but that's a weird answer.
