Mary Ray

Mary has 2 DVDs one for the lower classes:- Pre Beginners to Novice & Novice to Crufts

There are other DVDs but most are not UK style Obedience.

Mary is a lovely lady, who has been very successful in all types of dog activities, she stopped doing agility because of arthritis.

You'll find the rules on obedienceuk.net.

There are some good youtube tutorials but as Jodee mentions, a lot are not the UK style, however exercises such as rear end awareness are the same on either side of the pond.

I'll get you some links soon.

Fantastic, thanks. How much does "Novice" cover? Would that be the kind of things done at open shows?

All classes have some heelwork, recall & stays The KC has introduced some new classes which you will find in the "G Regs" which are the rules for Obedience & they are definitely worth downloading & spending a little time reading through

Puppy to Novice will cover the classes up to Novice & if you have never competed in KC Obedience you will start in the lowest class at shows which is usually Pre Beginners as not many shows are including the Introductory Class at the moment. Pre Beginners, Beginners & Novice are basically the same exercises with retrieve being added to Beginners & Novice Most judges set different "rounds"in the classes gradually requiring a higher level of precision & accuracy as you progress up the classes & setting harder heelwork

It's worth just going to a local show for a day out so you can watch the various classes & chat to people for advice & information.

I judged a "B" which is the second highest class on Sunday & my ring steward is still competing in Pre Beginners & Ring stewarding is a good way of getting experience of the higher classes without having to worry about competing She did a brilliant & faultless job BTW

Agree with what JoedeeUK says you can't beat going to a show/event whatever your chosen sport and helping out to get a feel for it, and make some contacts.
If you look on the obedienceuk site as has already been suggested for a guide to obedience, you will see all the shows listed.

Did you find the Mary Ray DVD answered your questions Shane?
I was wondering whether it would be worth taking a punt myself.

LMAO

Very sorry, I didn't realise there was new replies here.
To be honest I didn't rate the DVD for the price.

I found it dull and learned very little but that might just be me as there is no question, she is a talented trainer.

Actually I have leant more from asking a few questions of ObedienceUK
