Pancreatitis in dogs

My 9/10 year old little rescue dog Willow has recently been diagnosed with pancreatitis and had to spend 5 days at the vet’s on drips etc. Since she’s come home, she’s been struggling to eat anything. I’ve tried tempting her with boiled chicken, baby food, mashed potato, boiled fish etc. but she will only eat very little. At least that’s something and I understand her recovery could be a long process. What worries me is the sudden shaking and spasms. They only last a couple of minutes but she’s very unhappy and I think she must be experiencing pain at this time. Timewise, this happens randomly so unless she was on pain relief all the time, I’m not sure what else I can do. She had such a rotten start in life (4 years in a pretty grim shelter, no walks, no love or care) and we’ve had her for nearly 5 years now and love her to bits. Has anyone else experienced this with their pet and have any advice please? Thanks.

Hello Leni and welcome
Poor little dog, I understand pancreatitis can be very painful

Dogs with pancreatitis frequently feel nauseous so it isn't surprising they don't want to eat.
I would try offering small amounts of food every couple of hours, just a tablespoon at a time.
Smell is more important to dogs than taste and bland food diet can be unappealing. You could try adding something low fat and tasty to the food mixing it in really well, just half a small teaspoon to add smell eg cooked minced liver/kidney/very lean beef to boiled white rice or mashed potato.

A little honey in warm water is acceptable to some dogs or they may lick a little off your finger.

If your dog is experiencing pain it may be feeling the cold so I would keep it nice and warm

I hope your little dog improves soon .

I always found turkey to have the most aroma to tempt dogs who have a problem with their nose or appetite. Dry roast it if you can. Turkey legs are cheap to buy or turkey mince can be roasted and cut up small.
