Is eating snails bad for puppies/dogs

For the past two nights Hector has picked up, chewed and swallowed snails!

It makes me feel violently ill looking at the gunk that is escaping from his mouth, but is it bad for him?

Snails and slugs can carry a certain type of worm (I forget which one now though!).
When prescribing the worming tablets my vet specifically asked me if my dogs ate snails and slugs because the worming tablets he prefers doesn't cover the worms which the snails/slugs can carry.

Other than that, not sure that there's too much to worry about - I'm sure I've read of a number of Dogsey dogs eating snails and slugs.

Ok cool, thanks.

I obviously try not to let him eat them but he always seems to find one or two.

Hi Cat Millie puppy loves slugs and snails, when going out at 3am to relive herself a quick slimy snack was grabbed enthusiastically. I asked the vet about picking up worms from them (lung worms in particular) and she said it wasn't a big problem. (Panacur is the best wormer for lung-worm) She said the lung worm comes mainly from foxes.

What is a problem is if the slugs and snails have eaten slug pellets in someones garden before your puppy gets them.

The slug slime is horrid too and almost impossible to remove from a puppy's beard.

The latest puppy craze in our house is Daddylonglegs and hours are spent watching them skim over the lawn at dusk then munching them..

I think Milbemax is the wormer which covers the badness that snails carry. Hope he grows out of it!

They can give lungworm, one of the few things our vet said gave it star.

The vet around here said that the particular kind of snails/slugs around here can give the dogs lungworm, regular wormers don't protect them from it - so go the vets and ask specifically for a lung wormer asap.
