Hi Katiecoos.
My Papillon, did something similar a while ago, she damaged her neck and squealed out a lot,but NOT in the Vets!! She also couldnt pick her head up very high for a while. With rest and anti-inflammatories she made a full recovery. Good luck.
Dawn.

I only came in again to see how Daisy was, and I'm glad she seems to be better now, let's hope it is soft tissue damage like the vet said, and you won't have to go down that road of testing for the SHM, fingers crossed for you

Jodee, I don't know whether you read that right what the vet actually said about the age of these dogs? She said from 2 upwards, and all the dogs you have mentioned have all been well over this age? Surely 2 upwards means anything up to 12, 13, 14, and 15, but not under 2yrs. old?

I hope the vet is right in her diagnosis anyway, as that SHM sounds very scarey indeed!

i think it can be confusing Helen it was said a few years ago in the research programme for SM was that if a dog has it it normally rears around 2 years old thats certainly what a lot of vets seem to think ..sad to say its now showing much later on in dogs that have had it many years and not shown any symptons till much later in life...now this is the hard part when breeding you can use a stud thats 3 and all seems well then later you find he has it and his dad has it at 8 years old and the problem goes on and on

Thanks Inca, I'm finding this very interesting, as I had never even heard of this condition before this thread. Is it prevailant in Cavaliers then, or are other dogs affected by it?? I see what you mean about the breeding problems too, it would seem this may get worse then in this particular breed. How awful. The only answer then would be to scan any prospective stud dogs maybe, if they allowed it, and if you could afford it?

I did read the
and this illness usually shows in dogs about 2 years old
but it is actually from 5/6 months upwards & the younger the dog the worse the symptoms from what my vet & Geoff Skerritt have told me & most very young dogs end up being PTS unless they are candidates for surgery to relive the pain.

What is frightening is that it is being diagnosed more in the under two year olds & the much older dogs(ie over 8 )

Whilst we have breeders who won't MRI scan & won't hold their hands up to having bred SHM dogs(like the breeders of my boys & some top kennels) add to these breeders & vets who have little or no knowledge of SHM & I feel as if I'm hitting my head on a brickwall

Thank goodness the researchers are now mapping the whole Genome of the Cavalier with the help of US breeders & Vets perhaps we will see a DNA test/screening that will help the breed become more healthy

It doesn't help when noted people in the breed think that SHM is not a problem & that the reasrchers should focus on MVD instead(as per a letter in Dog World the other week)She obviously has never had a dog in distress with SHM.

The numbers being referred have risen from one every couple of months to four or more a week to each of the specialists with MRI facilities in addition to dogs that obviously have SHM without needing an MRI scan & the AHT referrals
