What will happen? Untreated cruciate ligament

Just a question out of curiosity really. If a Med/Large breed dog tears a cruciate ligament is the operation necessary? and if the dog doesn't have the operation what effects will it have on the dog? pain? obviously it will have limited use of that leg?

Thanks

that ,i would imagine, is down to whether it was a full or partial tear and if the meniscus was damaged or not.also, age, weight, temp etc....

Chances are if it's not operated on they will put so much weight on the good leg that will also go pretty quickly and this is exactly what happened to my dog.
My specialist told me that the cruciate is like a piece of elastic in a pair of pyjama bottoms where as in the elasticity gets looser and looser until it goes.

When our last dog ruptured her cruciate ligament, the vet told us that for a while it would get better.......then it would progressively get MUCH worse, with a great deal of pain and the likelihood of the other back leg suffering the same fate.

Why do you not want the dog to have the op? Is he infirm? (apart from the leg I mean)

Its not my dog. Mine has already had it done over a year ago. Its someone elses dog. They have been to the vet with it and was told to rest the dog but that was a few months ago. The dog isnt insured and so I think the operation is unlikely to happen. I just wanted to know what would happen if this dog never had the op.

What a shame the dog could go without the op. Can't they go to the PDSA? Or are they not entitled?
Even if they only paid for the basic op which is around £800 it's better than nothing.

They aren't entitled. I dont think they will want to spend that much on their dog I will talk to them about it, but have to be careful as its the OH relative. She's not showing pain but Im thinking she must be with an injury like that. Shes not on Metacam or anything either

I find that very sad i really do. Why do people get dogs and decide they don't want to spend money on them.

My dog is insured but not for her elbows because i changed companys 2 yrs ago knowing they wouldn't be insured and knowing if another problem arose i'd have to pay for it and i did. Last Saturday i paid out £2600 out of my own bank.
