I vaguely recall there being a term for it in rats but can't remember what.

Look up info about the Agouti gene - this is the one that gives fur the banded appearance (was trying to rack my brains about rats but wasn't quite getting it because Agouti is the name of one of the varieties in rats and my brain was getting confused!)
