I'd hate for there to be a Champion class at UK shows. At least when we make up Champions we know they've beaten ALL the dogs not just the 'also rans'. The petition smacks of sour grapes to me - people not making up Champions blaming it on 'facey' judging.

In other countries where they have a Champion class you can almost guarantee making a half decent dog up - dogs which may not be of the quality to go head to head with the dogs in the Champions class. At least in this country you can say that your dog "is of such outstanding merit as to be worthy of the title of Champion". I constantly hear people say that judges only give CCs to established Champions or big winners - one only has to look at the results sites to see that untitled dogs regularly beat Champions. There's simply no need for this class.

My feelings are if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I think it's broke and not sour grapes for me as I've never had a good enough dog to worry about it lol!
Duly signed and passed on!

I like the Irish system where a dog has to get 7 Green Stars under 7 different judges to be "made up."
Although Champions go into a "Champions" class, quality of Green Star winners is maintained by the stipulation that only dogs graded as "excellent" or puppies graded as "Very promising" may compete for the Green Star. In other words, no "excellent" dogs, no Green Star.
I really like the FCI practice of judges grading each dog in the ring and telling you there and then why they have graded your dog in this way.

Yes, I think if we had a grading system, as the FCI countries do, a champions class would work.

But as it stands at the moment (with no grading), eliminating champions form the challenge certainly would lower the quality, as judges are very reluctant to withhold. The title of UK Champion would lose it's value.

Now if the petition was for champion classes along with routine grading, I would be in favour.

But under FCI/Irish Kennel Club system now, the winner of the Champion class DOES compete for the Green Star/CACIB and we get so many non-breed specialists that they tend to go for the Champion class winner for the ticket as it is "safe". Poor Deccy is in Open and doomed to stay there, I think!
Having a separate Champions class is not all it's cracked up to be!
International judges have no trouble in withholding, either!

That's not usual for other FCI countries though Deccy is it? Edit: I think the whole point of a CH class is that they don't challenge.

And Yep.... it's our UK judges that won't (or very, very rarely) withhold
