If you could make health testing compulsory....

...what tests would you insist for your breed and why?

Following on from another thread I thought it would be interesting to hear what people would insist upon if they could!

In my breed (miniature poodles) I would insist on being compulsory;
DNA testing for prcd-PRA
eye exam for g-PRA
Graded for luxating patella

I would request that the following tests were recommended in addition to the above;
Hip scoring
declaring free from Leggs Calve Perths disease.

I wouldn't insist on restricting to clears only or low scores to begin with but think there should be a 5 year window for people. If everyone had to do it things would progress a little quicker! I'm pretty certain the Miniature Poodle could be completely free of prcd-PRA in 5 years if everyone had to test.

For Pei's, definitely Amyloidosis, a big killer in my breed and I lost my first pei to it, there is no available test for this horrible disease and breeders continue to knowingly breed from infected dogs.

There are others but this would be the main one i would like to see available.

Very few peis are tested at all, for anything

Mine have, so far, had hip scores, eye test and vwd test. At the time of hip scoring there was no requirement for elbows, but it is something that is now being done in our breed at the same time as hips. I am going to elbow score, but the vwd test was horrendously expensive, so have to save some more pennies up first, as it will cost me at least £300 I reckon to have my 2 done, it was £280 I think when they had their hips scored, so is bound to have gone up, nothing goes down does it

Id like to insist on hip scoring and testing for all eye diseases. There is research into late onset cataracts in Borders, but up to yet its only been declared (by opthalmologists) as an old age canine problem and not an inherited one, I hope it stays that way.

The Borders I know of that have been hip scored were done at 3yrs old and 2yrs, I think 12mths is better like other breeds.

if ONE dog in any breed has suffered from a health disease then i think it should be complusary.

TNS was a really good case in point other here in the uk, it hit the uk & everyone pulled together publishling the results & the pedigrees.

Thanks for that. One reason why if a DNA test is available it should be compulsory.

In the GSD apart from hips/elbows and heamophillia they should also be tested for dwarfism to see if they are carriers, also DM and once the test for epilepsy is available that should be included aswell.
Chodsky Pes hips/elbows.

PPCS,Which is a new i condition cropping up more and more.
