Maybe the only reason they have not had a dog before is because of work commitments and now have more time.

Sounds sensible to me.

How old is the pup? What is known about its background?

Personally, I think it would be better for the pup to have the chance of going into a good working home if one were available, before considering pet homes.

However, if that weren't an option for whatever reason, then I would need to know a little more about the couple and their understanding of collies, as well as their long-term commitment to the dog before making a decision. Also, as others have said, gut instinct plays a large part when assessing prospective new homes.

I would have them look at all the relevant information on here ...

www.bordercollierescue.org

Most especially (and perhaps print out for them) ...

I would also definitely print out and give them this ...

Thanks for those links, I will definitely be passing them on, they encompass all my areas of concern.

Finally, can I say again...
their age is not the issue!!!!!!!
Sorry for being a bit shouty but I think that I have said this 3 times already. (Some of you oldies may need to put your hearing aids in and your glasses on.)

My concern is the combination of inexperience and a potentially 'worky' dog.

The advice leaflets on that particular collie rescue site are brilliant! I am sure they would also be happy to speak to your couple about having a collie as a pet.

Erm ... I don't think I mentioned their ages at all

Ok Ok us oldies hear you.

Reading more of your posts I understand what you are now saying but must admit from your introduction to the problem did read it as the age was a concern for you too.

Good luck and I hope things work out well with the rehoming.

I would treat them as individuals and assess their commitment and situation.50 is not old and it would be a shame to turn them down if the dog could have a great home.

May I (while restraining myself from shouting at the computer) calmly refer you to post #33

I understand why you are concerned but if every novice owner only ever considered "easy" dogs (not too sure what breed I would consider as easy) then many rescue dogs would never get the opportunity to live in a loving home. Collies can be lively dogs sure but so can many other breeds they aren't unique in needing special owners.

If I had heeded the nay sayers I would never have had my first dog or 3rd or 6th. Give people the facts and then give them the chance they may well be just what the dogs needs.
