I agree totally with Dawn. What may be fine for one dog, may not suit another. A behavourist will be able to advise you whether castration will suit your dog in particular. I am doubtful that this is a good thing to do to a nervous dog, but an expert may disagree, depending on how they see your dogs charactor

Difficult!

It's true that castrating a nervous dog may make the dog worse because testosterone is a "social" hormone in that it gives social confidence esp. towards other dogs.

You really need someone to help you decide just how nervous your dog is and why he is mounting. For example if you can just redirect him to a toy or otherwise get him off, and if DAP etc helps then it may well be best to leave him.

I had a dog that was very nervous and timid and castrating him was the best thing I ever did.
I can only think his nerves were down to the fact his hormones were working overtime and he was getting worried and confused.
3 months after the op he just calmed down and become confident happy and very easy going.

Hi madmare.
I think thats more the exception rather than the rule. Castrating nervous dogs for the most times is a very bad idea. Taking away his testosterone will make him less confident, as its been said it is a "social" hormone and is vital to gaining a nervous dog's confidence. Possibly when the dogs emotional problems have been addressed it could be considered, but I certainly wouldnt do it at this point.
Dawn.

I agree it probaly was the exception, but told the OP of this experience as its good to hear all experiences on all sides.
To look at why the dog is nervous is the most important 1st step before taking action on what decision to make on trying to help rectify it.

Many thanks Murphydog, I will give him a ring and take it from there. I will let you know how I get on. That was really kind of you, I do hope its not too far from me as Ozzie (yes, you've guessed) is scared of the car also.
