Buying a new dog

Hi everyone

You will have to bear with me and be gentle,as i am new to all of this well here goes

I am going to look at a puppy tomorrow that is a cross between a border collie and a Dandi di dimont(think that is how it is spelt) and have got a few quetion as to what it may look like ,When i first enquired about this puppy the ownner was saying that the puppy was crossed between a collie and a standard poodle but now says that the mom may have had contact with this dandi at the same time so believes it will be more like the dandi rather than it brither and sisters that are more like the poodle so i am now thinking what the hell will it grow up like (any ideas)
Thanks for anybodys help

That would be a weird cross

Try not to let your heart rule your head.....easier said than done I am sure

If the bitch was in contact with more than one dog I would be a bit suspect about the breeder to be honest....don't be afraid to ask the hard questions (health testing etc) to make sure it is the dog for you.

Have fun

Absolutely impossible to say what it will turn out like.

All pups in a litter will inherit a different characteristics from each parent in variable measures so it is very likely that no two will turn out to be exactly the same either in looks or temperament.

Indeed, if the bitch was mated by more than one dog, then there could be collie x poodle pups and collie x DD pups in the litter. Only DNA testing would confirm who the father of each pup is.

With crossbreeds, you pay your money and take your chances.

Hi,

I assuming you'll get to see the pup but will you get to see the parents (including the 2 dogs)?

If not then I'd leave this pup well alone if I were you. NO reputable breeder would allow her bitch to go near 2 different dogs, not knowing what the pups would look like. And if you ask all the question sna dare happy with the answers, choosing to go ahead with the purchase, make sure you aren't ripped off financially for is effectively a mongrel. There are some from BDH that are FREE.

So if you want a pup so you have a dog for as long as is possible and you can raise it how you want to then shop around. have you done your homework on the relevant collie breed and the breeds of the potential sires to this pup? You need to know about any health issues, temperament etc and ask the "breeder" about these too.

Otherwise, if you're not in a huge rush or there's something yuo're not 100% happy with, then back away from this pup. There will be other chances, other pups that you can have for just as long and rasie as your own.

Or think about a 6 month old dog that possibly would be house trained already that may be in rescue.

I'm not saying that you shouldn't buy from a breeder at all. That's entirely your choice. But to not know the father of the pups for sure seems like the owner just doesn't care - so long as she has pups to sell. Although I could be very wrong - this is just my opinion.

Good luck with whatever you decide and when you do get a pup, we have to see piccie splease.

Hi,

Think we were posting around the same time then.

Well naughty dogs will be naughty dogs....!!!

But you still need to know that the pup is healthy - had first vaccs at least, wormed, general health checks, ask about the health of the parents and I assume you can see the mother with the pup? How old is the pup?

I wasn't trying to put you off havin g a pup. I just want you to have th epup that's right for you.

I have 3 dogs and my middle dog was going to be dumped. I didn't really want her and allowed emotion to get in the way. I love her to bits now just as I do the others, but I took her on for the wrong reasons. (Wrong reasons for me but right reasons for her).

i think at the end of the day, if the farmer isnt in it for the money then I would assume he isnt asking a lot of money for them in which case, you take your chances on what you get, if they are giving them away for good homes, and you have thought long and hard about a pup and it is the right time for you, then I dont see what the problem is. However if they are asking for a lot of money for what is effectively an accident and a crossbreed then i would walk away as thats different entirely.

good luck - will be interesting to see what a dandie dinmont x collie would actually look like, I know a lab cross dandie and its a mighty weird looking dog - lab body on dandie dinmont wee short legs !!!!

I would worry about the socialisation of the pups, have they been raised in the house, and had plenty of visitors? Some farmers don't look on animals as pets and treat them accordingly.

My sister has let her heart rule her head twice with dogs from farms and both of those were nervous of people and didn't ever really wholly get over it.

Best of luck whatever you decide.
