IMO you should go with a dry food that has the most protein and less fat in it. Check the labels on it. Hills and the like (Proplan for ex) do not have BHT type preservatives. In that sense thats good.

price doesnt actually mean anything. Try Acana for example. If it exists where you are. Its canadian and it has the highest protein content I have seen.

I am also going to change from Hills to Acana. (after lots of research) and its like 30-40% cheaper than Hills.

Some links for your research

I hope this helps

Royal Canin is owned by Pedigree Petfoods/Mars - back to the ethical animal testing problem again.

I like Trophy - not tested on animals. JWB and Argen grange are good too.

I don't think you have to spend £50+ on dog food to get the best for your dog.
Its what suits your dog.
My lots were fed on Arden Grange....great food i love it (well not personally) but i had to change my because even though i get it VAT free i had to change to a slightly cheaper brand. So i switched to CSJ.
Now their coat's have changed dramatically. They are so much shinier & softer. And i'm only spending £10.25 per bag rather that the £25.00 for the Arden Grange.
So don't just go by the expensive food (but don't buy the crap like Baker's, Pedigree, Winalot etc) Stick to the more natural food.
You will soon find a good food that suits your dog
Best of luck

Having just done some research i've found that JWB and Royal CANIN are the same company and when you ring through on the CANIN helpline (as i just did) they actually give advice for both. They are gonna send me samples on next day delivery which is very helpfull...

There's food for thought....
