What is reasonable

Hello everyone, just a question for you. What should I consider to be a reasonble amount to pay for veterinary care? I know that country wide the costs vary considerably, and even here in York the costs vary. Fortunately we haven't been to the vets with gus for a number of years, and yes he is insured, but the mere cost of going in and asking the vet a question is astronomical, and I was on the lookout for a vet with cheaper consultation fees. I know the argument you gets what you pay for, but when I speak to people I just get the feeling that some time people are being riped off and althogh the standard of care being given is OK the cost outways the advantages I guess that vets feel they have a captive audience! Sorry to go on but we ae getting a puppy soon and I just want to be sure that I am getting the right care for the right price.

I pay £12 to walk through the door then whatever else is needed on top of that (it cost £60 when I got the vet out of bed at 1am on Christmas morning to treat a case of cystitis ). It was £60 well spent I thought for peace of mind

If you suspect that you are being ripped off, then you probably are, but a good vet in whom you have confidence is worth his/her weight in gold. We have complete and utter trust in our vet and, even though he is expensive, would never consider going elsewhere. When the account is a bit painful I look at the overheads, etc. and generally find the charges quite reasonable. (We pay AU$36 for a consulation + any meds, treatment, etc., on top)

At my vets, you pay £12 ish for consultation fee, then any meds/treatment on top. Meds/treatment aren't that expensive either.
Also, if you have to go for a follow up, they don't ususally charge

At my old vets I paid £25 for walking thru the door......and to be honest was not impressed with the vet(s).but they had lovely new buildings and new theatre for ops.......we changed £12 at new vet and they are in an old victorian bulding but the difference in care is 100%!! the only problem is....the new vet is an older man and he tells me he will be retiring in a few yers eeekkk!
