I would agree with that, Anne. That was my first thought when watching the video.

Thing is, I don't think it's a question of whether the dog 'wants' to do it or not, but rather the fact that owner/handling is permitting it and actively encouraging/training the dog to do it. That's the way I see it anyway.

It's not a move I particularly like. Like Anne, I do HTM with my Westie and she can stand on her to back legs, but I only let her do it for a few seconds at a time and not ever day either. I don't think it's particularly good for their backs, hips or other joints related to this move.

I must admit to feeling more than uncomfortable after watching that for a little while.........the dressing up was demeaning and unnecessary, and the constant upright position made me cringe a little to be honest.

Well, I have to disagree with most of you. Of course I guess that is what makes the world go around...everyone has an opinion. I think it is great that dogs get out and keep healthy by getting involved in some activity. You mentioned things that made you cringe.

Let me tell you what makes me cringe. There is a lady that lives about 4 blocks from me. She has a Basset Hound that is 5 years old. She never walks it, never lets it come into the back yard to run, it just sits in the house all day and eats like she does....The 5 year old Basset Hound weighs 213 lbs. It looks like a huge balloon, when it walks (and it barely can) it grunts and groans. The lady may think it is cool for her to weigh 450 pounds, but no way in hell she should treat her dog that way.

This is a lady that truely has NO RIGHT in owning a dog, and SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, on the people who sold her or gave her the dog. All they have done is gave the dog a certain death sentence. It just makes me sick!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is such a fine line, and some should stay on the other side of it. There are some in here (not all of you mind you) that would say the upon seeing a video of a St. Bernard "he is in that cold snow way too long", when seeing a video of a Australian shepherd herding, would say "he is working way too hard", or "that Greyhound is running way too fast".........to those very few, step back a little, chill out, take another pill and everything will be fine....

Are you crazy or what? That was really uncalled for. The person said dressing up a dog was demeaning to them..Ok, then all of the fine chaps (is that how you say it over there) that put out their little Christmas cards with doggy all dressed up, or the cute little ones with the custom made sweaters and all.......I guess that is also demeaning...

And you really ought to keep your smart ass remarks to yourself. If you think it was funny, it was not.

Have you weighed that dog?

213lb is 15 stone 3lb which is over twice as much as I do, and I am hardly skinny.

Have you done anything about it seeing as how you are so concerned, such as contacting an animal welfare organisation?

The dog in that video will no doubt end up with major spine and hip problems, but hey, as long as its owner is making money from it by such an exhibition, why should you care. You just enjoy watching it while most dog lovers cringe in their seats watching it.

Have you even stopped for one minute of your obvious delight in such activity to consider that once the dog is not making any money for the owner it will probably be discarded as no longer wanted?

I think not.
