Very Pleased With My Vet, Furious With Tesco's

I took Lily to see the vet this morning as she was in pain with her tummy problems and was feeling sick and being a weekend and knowing how Lily goes I thought it best to get her checked, especially as she even refused a little chicken. I had already given her pro- kolin, Antepsin and Zantac liquid first thing this morning.
By the time we got there Lily was looking a little happier. The vet examined her and said she was tense in her tummy and still feeling sick, however she could not give her a shot of serenia to stop the sickness as Lily reacts badly to it and she was dubious about trying another one as we don't know how Lily would react to that, so I said i would rather not.
While there I got her to check Lilys eyes as she has been rubbing at them for some time, they were fine and I got her anal glands emptied.
She gave me 30 more tramadol as she said Lily can have those for her tummy pain and to keep up with the pro kolin, the Antepsin and if Lily didn't like the Zantac liquid to go to Tesco and get it in tablet form. She wrote strength and dosage on one of her cards for me.
For all this my bill come to £17 so I was very very pleased with that.

I then went to Tesco to get the Zantac and the assistant said they had a Tesco version , which the vet said she could have, for £1.25. So i said i would have 2 packs of them. As the assistant was ringing it up on the till, she noticed my vet card with it all written on and asked if it was for an animal. I told her my vet had told me to come and buy it for my dog and the stupid assistant then refused to sell it to me . So I said well i will say its for me then but she told me I was too late , so i said i would come back and get it later for myself and she said don't bother coming back while I am here today as I won't sell it to you.
To say I am peed off is an understatement. What difference does it make to them, its not a dangerous drug, and the vet had written down to get it. She was such a jobsworth

Is there another Tesco you can go to, or maybe an in-house Asda pharmacy and ask for the same sort of thing, obviously not showing them the card!! It is getting such hard work these days even getting painkillers you can only have so many and then they have to authorise it.
Nanny State is an understatement.
Hope Lily starts feeling better as the day goes on and you get your very well deserved meal out.

Jasper got stung by a bee once and the vet told me to give him 1/2 a piriton. He did say when buying them don't say it's for an animal as they won't sell them to you. Hope you manage to get them from some where and Lily gets better soon.

Oh blimey there are some drugs that dogs need that are only for human consumption not sure if that is the right phrase. I know this because when Ollie was very ill and we suspected he might have oh gosh my brain has gone walk about today the fungal infection of the nose can't remember the name the only drug to treat it is a human grade drug. He didn't need it in the end.
Dillon's Zantac came from the vet but its human grade I did have to sign a form to say I had been told it was not tested for the use in animals but it was perfectly safe.
I would trust my vet every time over a counter assistant in Tesco being a jobs worth.

Strange that the vet didn't have Zantac tablets As TW says try another supermarket.
I hope Lily is better soon.

what does it matters if that Zantac is for you or for your dog? don't get that really, why you didn't get it

and what has that to care the assistant at all? I think, that's not her business

at all, is she right to refuse to sell you that Zantac, even when you say only later, that it is for youself?

Am I the only one happy they did this ? it's OK when you have vet advice but they may well save a dogs life one day stopping someone buying and giving human meds to their dog.

I am not against doing it, my vet has suggested human meds several times but it does worry me how many people just buy off the shelf without any idea if it's safe.

How is this Tesco's fault?

Any pharmacist will refuse to sell you human drugs if they know it is for an animal - it is against their license (yes I found this out years ago when buying Piriton for an animal).

Just say it is for you or a family member and they will sell it to you.

I'm sorry but it is not her fault for following procedure - go to ANY pharmacy and tell them you are buying the drugs for an animal and they will refuse to sell you them.

Take it as a lesson learnt - it really isn't her fault, they are not allowed to sell them to you for animal consumption.

From what I recall if it was a POM V or POMVPS (presc. only vet/vet qualified person) med, and the vet had given you a written signed prescription - it should have been OK.

If this is something you can buy over the counter - I don't know except it was bad luck they knew it wasn't for you because they obv. wouldn't question it apart from maybe advising you of side effects.

But I know there are laws governing the sale of meds for animals (again from recall something to do with food-producing animals) DEFRA probably has the details.

It wasn't a prescription - from the sound of it the vet simply wrote down the strength and dosage needed on one of their business cards.
