Does anyone know if you have to pay tax on the proceeds of selling house? Even the interest accrued on the lump sum put into a savings account?

Brenda...I have no clue, sorry....I could ask my brother if you want??
Kazz, she hasn't spoken to him yet, tbh.... it's a conversation I am dreading happening, he is likely to blow his top. When mum and dad were going to America, he demanded mum give him their flight details so he could pay for an upgrade, mum said they were fine with the seats they had and she knew how expensive it was...he kept on and on demanding the details, she said they kindly thanked him for the offer but they were happy with the seats they had and the figure was obscene for an upgrade and neither felt comfortable doing it....he didn't speak to them for 2 months! When I had just been diagnosed, had my first session of chemo and been sent out of hospital, he wanted to come up...mum said if you have had a cough cold sore throat etc please don't come, he said he had a cough but it was fine, he was coming up, mum said please don't, you could kill your sister...give it a week or two and then come provided you are well, again he hung up and didn't speak to her for weeks. I am sure this will most likely somehow be my fault...pretty much everything is lol

Are you thinking of Capital Gains Tax, Brenda?

If so it only applies if you have a house you don't live in, ie a second home, that you have sold.

I've never known tax having to be paid on selling a house that you are living in

That's what my brother said Chris. He said that the stamp duty is applicable to buyers and there's no tax on selling the family home
