Mine only wear collars when they go out.
Up until we got Rio they used to wear their collars permanantly, but Rio chews them so after their walks I take them off.

Never since we have owned him has he worn a collar or chain indoors, but we want to get him used to a chain... so yesterday we put one on him.

And its easier for us to grab if he decides to lunge at someone at the front door.

Once Christmas is done, we have also got to get him chipped.

Mine wear collars only when they go out. Like Thordell & Archer I think the potential for damage, especially if you have 2 or more dogs, is too high to leave collars on all the time.

The danger is higher if you have more than one dog, but there are any numbers of dogs that have been killed because their collars have become caught in something and the dog has been choked to death, it is particularly important in breeds that jump.

Even amongst people I know or know of there have been 4 cases, one on a door knob as I said, one on the shaped top of a wooden fence, one on mesh fence and one on a tree. In the case of the tree the owner was with the dog but could not get there in time. And have just remembered one in a car on the travelling cage when left whilst the owner popped into a shop, this one was a puppy in a slip chain.

I agree 100% with SB and Thordell, my two always wear rolled collars with a tag underneath their large collars when out for a walk, if I have people in they wear them but generally they only wear them when out walking, I have heard too many bad stories also about the risks of strangulation and of course my two play very rough especially around the neck area so I need to watch that too.

They are also both microchipped too which I think is important, the tags that they wear only reveal my name, the dogs name and my telephone number, recently Kip lost her collar on a walk but I never worried about anybody finding it because it doesnt contain any information that could lead them to my house but I could see how a tag with a home address could worry you.

Toby only wears a collar when he goes out for walks and if he does go to the door with us he has been trained that he dose not go through the door before me. As for getting out of the yard there is no way he can do this as our yard is very secure with locked gates.

Below is alist of the only instances that a dog can be out in public without a collar on taken from here

http://www.hmso.gov.uk/si/si1992/Uksi_19920901_en_1.htm

Wearing of collars by dogs
(1) above shall not apply to—
(a) any pack of hounds,
(b) any dog while being used for sporting purposes,
(c) any dog while being used for the capture or destruction of vermin,
(d) any dog while being used for the driving or tending of cattle or sheep,
(e) any dog while being used on official duties by a member of Her Majesty's Armed Forces or Her Majesty's Customs and Excise or the police force for any area,
(f) any dog while being used in emergency rescue work, or
(g) any dog registered with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
