Whats the difference? Tracking & searching....

Both are nose work but what are the main differences - especially in terms of teaching & directing the dog.

Thanks!

Basically

Searching is finding an article – whether it is a person, something with human scent on it, or a substance like a bomb, drugs or money. The article has to be present in the search area and the dog follows scent emanating from the article to the source.

Tracking is following the scent deposited by a person (or other animal) on the ground after they have gone. The person does not have to be present – they could be gone hours before. The dog follows the scent track left by the person until it can do so no more, or until it bumps into the person.

Searching is dead useful if the 50pence piece size back falls off your watch unoticed while bank holiday gardening in this garden:

This is where we found it in the long border.

Guessed it might be somewhere along that border and Scented him on the metal strap - guess he was probably sniffing for me. Who knows. Have made jokes about him finding a lost dog lead and a lost dog (coincidence) before - but third time's a charm?

Thanks dog.

Hijack over.
