Apparently I have 2 Bandogs!

I`ve just discovered (yes I am a bit slow...) that GSDs are Bandogs in Ireland. They must be kept muzzled etc. Except if they`re police dogs
I`m stunned. I knew they were banned in Dublin council estates, but apparently it is country-wide. What a demented piece of legislation.

when did this come in then, i was over not long back visiting family and i saw GSDs without muzzles, i knew about the council housing but from my understanding that is not overly enforced.

I'm a little confused...do you mean they are banned dogs or classed as Bandogs?

Either way, it's a bit ridiculous. Are they part of the DDA over there?

They are not banned they are on the restricted breed list. In my opinion a very stupid law but one that I haven't ever seen enforced. You see loads of unmuzzled dogs around and I know lots of people that own dogs of these breeds.

Under the Control of Dogs (Restriction of Certain Dogs) Regulations, 1991, additional rules were imposed in relation to the following breeds of dogs in Ireland:

* American Pit Bull Terrier
* English Bull Terrier
* Staffordshire Bull Terrier
* Bull Mastiff
* Doberman Pinscher
* German Shepherd
* Rhodesian Ridgeback
* Rottweiler
* Japanese Akita
* Japanese Tosa

And to every other strain or cross of these breeds

The regulations state the following:

* These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must be kept on a short, strong lead by a person over 16 years who is capable of controlling them.
* These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must be muzzled whenever they are in a public place.
* These dogs, or strains and crosses of them, must wear a collar bearing the name and address of their owner at all times.

i hate it when breeds are banned as it shows absolutley no awareness of dog behaviour. Its not the breeds that should be baned put the people who abuse them and make them aggressive.

I was reading a story about a guy who is having to rehome his old GSD in Ireland because neighbours complained he barked so the Court said PTS or get rid.
CALL described it as a `ban-dog` list. Even crosses have to be muzzled & controlled. Madness.
Guess where I`m not going on my holidays then?

It's really shocked me reading this what gives anyone the right to insist someone gives up their dog for what some ignorant numpties think. They should be spending more time bringing to justice and controlling the 'hobos', criminals, and low life that make many folk and their dogs/animals lives a real pain in the **se, sorry for rant.

I totally agree, but honestly I have never ever seen it enforced and have lived in Ireland since 1996.
