Most dogs don't need you to do it for them at all. If you've had no problems with your dog's anal glands, just leave them alone.

Hoki is the only one of my dogs who's ever had a problem and so she's the only one who's we get the vet to empty (i've never fancied doing it myself!) We just take her when she's showing signs of discomfort - e.g. licking the area.

Suki has always had problems, but seems to be showing signs more frequently.

The answer to that is when they need doing. That is, if the dog is scooting his bum on the floor or biting and licking at it. They can be emptied naturally if his poos are bulky and firm, so a food that firms him up is good. You can also add bran (oat bran is better than wheat bran) to his diet to make his poos firm and bulky so they squeeze the anal glands on the way out. If you are concerned, ask to speak to the vet nurse at your vets. She can have a look for you, empty them and show you how to do it.
