Stone has UAP

The vet just called - he has Ununited Anconeal Process (UAP) - really have no idea what it is all about yet - I've got to collect him at 5.30 and they will talk me through it. But he will be referred to a specialist for surgery on both elbows

Generally, by 20-24 weeks of age, the anconeal process should have fused with the ulna. In UAP, the hook, or anconeal process, never attaches correctly to the rest of the ulna as the puppy is developing, but rather floats loose. It is held fairly close to where it should be by ligaments between it and other portions of the bone, but it is not solid enough to remain exactly where it should. This leads to joint instability, preventing the humerus and ulna from interacting correctly. Additionally, the loose anconeal process is often caught abnormally between the ends of the ulna and humerus thus irritating and bruising the articular surfaces. An ununited anconeal process is commonly found by itself with the elbow dysplasia syndrome, although it larger breeds it is often seen with fragmentation of the medial coronoid process.

Anyone heard of it?

What happens next ??

Will get a date for surgery by the end of the week - should be sometime next week. The specialist will decide from the xrays if they are going to do both at the same time or not.
(He is going to the same hospital where Vinnie had all his back operations.)

He has been wandering around the house whining since we got back, tail firmly tucked under, his eyes are soooo tired.

I am already dreading it - we haven't been apart for one night since I got him and you know what he's like (and me)! I don't know how long he will have to be in for yet.

I feel sick that I made him do all that agility and he was probably in pain all the time

I've just been along to the new agility club and told them we won't be back. And blubbed all the way home. I feel sick with worry about it all already

Poor Stone, big hugs from us, I'm afraid i've never heard of the condition.

Don't feel bad about making him do agility, he wouldn't have done if if it hurt him. It may only just be affecting him now and he is in the best hands being treated for it so soon xxx

I agree with Akitagirl - I'm sure you would've known if he had been uncomfortable - even with his desire to please you, there would have been signs. Its quite possible that in Stone's case, the ligaments are keeping his joints firmly in place.

Try to look on the positives of the operation - I know he will be away from you, but the time will pass and you can look forward to him getting better. x

Kay he most definately wasn't in pain at the displays last weekend. He was loving it & was as sound as a pound.
I really only saw a slight limp when we went out exploring in the woods.
He's nice & fit ,not over weight & young ...better to get the op done in the warmer dryer (fingers crossed) weather, than in the winter.

Oh hon, I'm so sorry! Please don't beat yourself up. It doesn't sound like he was showing any signs of pain at all, you couldn't have known. It sounds like you are right on top of his problems and getting him the best treatment possible. Good luck to you!

Hi Kay,

You really have to think of this as a positive, rather than a negative. When it's over, and Stone has fully recovered, you'll have a brand new dog. you can start agility again, and lovely long walks in the woods. Focus on that, and the time for Stone's convalescence will just fly past.
