I don't read much fiction but when I do I love Ruth Rendell-fav is"An Unkindness of Ravens". Also Paul Theroux- "London Embassy" and "The Consul's File" which are collections of short stories

They're a bit old, and probably out of print, but anything by John Masters is brilliant for a bit of atmosphere and adventure. Check out second-hand bookshops.

Also try Daphne du Maurier, and don't go in with too many preconceptions. She somehow got lumbered with a reputation for romance novels, but she actually wrote The Birds (made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock). My favourites are Jamaica Inn and The House on the Strand.

If you want something to keep you going for a while I really recommend The Count of Monte Cristo (Alexandre Dumas.) Not what I expected at all, really gripping stuff. I was so impressed, I followed it with The Three Musketeers, which is great fun, but not quite as slick.

If you like thrillers, make sure you've worked through John le Carre's back catalogue - The Spy who Came in from the Cold is a good place to start. And if you've never read The Catcher in the Rye (J. D Salinger), To Kill a
Mockingbird (Harper Lee) and Lord of the Flies (William Golding), then get started now!

ETA - Do you like Sci Fi? If so, then John Windham's stuff is a must. My favourite is The Crysalids.
