help needed please

hi all
i need smone advive plse. took lola 4 mth b terrier yes to forest off lead no probs. went to beach today what a disaster! recall not too good in fact one time she went off with another women and her dogs! but the worst problem hi her barking im realy fed up with it now. any dogs she sees shes barking constantly at. if they come over to her or bark at her she screams as though theyve hurt her but i know they havnt! im trying to get her used to other dogs (i do have 3 others) and i look after another dog a couple of times a week, but its very embarrassing she is a pup and she looks like a pup but people look at me as if i have a monster! do you think one of those collars that squirt when they bark will do the trick? i dont not want to take her out but the way shes going ill only be a ble to take her out when its dark! thanks for reading sorry its sooo long

Not really had experience with a barker like this, but i would from now on keep her on a long lead and introduce other dogs slowly to her.

Maybe meet with a friend with a dog.

Walk up to your friend whilst she is on a lead giving treats the minute her behaviour changes, turn and walk away with a "no". Then try again, she may realise that if she is quiet she can get closer to the other dog.

The minute she is quiet lots of praise and continue to walk to your friend, when barking a firm no and turn the other way with no other attention is what i would try.

As soon as she is quiet give her a treat and build it up. Timing has too be good with this though as you don't want to end up giving her a treat when she has just barked or she may bark for more.
Hope that makes sense, in a bit of a hurry

Hi
4 months old is a baby - well, maybe more like a 5-6 year old child. Have you taught the pup recall? If not, you can`t expect him to know what you want. And you wouldn`t expect a small child to know how to behave, would you?
I suggest you get a good book on training your pup (sorry if you`re already doing this) or find some puppy classes so you can get advice and your pup can learn to socialise with other dogs. A dog will only be as good as the training you put in!
good luck

hi
i have been training her since i got her at 8 weeks. like i said shes been training on a long line and only just came off yesterday which was great. i HAVE read books as ive trained my other 3 . but i dont have the trouble with barking as i do with her, i know shes a terrier but its not acceptable. when i went to the beach she was told NO at each bark when she was good she got a treat which was only once! in the half hour of the walk. i do try and socialise her with other dogs but the looks i get from other owners is like i said that i have a monster. she loves kids and is very gentle with them its just other dogs!

My son has a five year old JRT who has exactly the same problem. She does come back on recall, but still carries on barking and screams when another dog (bigger) gets near to her. However, having said that she is very small for a JRT, and I feel this is nervous/fright aggression, she too is lovely with people and kids. So my son has gone back to the classroom with her, and over the last few weeks there has been a noticeable difference. Pappi is fine when my dogs are with her, she either hides behind them or feels that she needs to protect the whole pack but not as bad as if she is alone. Try a good puppy class, if you get a good trainer they will help you work through it as my son's trainer has....and Pappi is no puppy. Perhaps old dogs can be taught new tricks....eh!. She has alot more confidence now anyway and doesn't do this behaviour anywhere near as much as she used to. Good luck
