Just looking into diseases in pei's and the site i have found states:

"The following diseases are reported to occur more frequently in the Chinese Shar-Pei than in the general dog population - Heart valve disorders, Abnormal development of major blood vessels to the heart and Heart muscle disease"

Yes, sometimes the valves dont develop properly and as the pup grows and wants to play more it puts a strain on the heart, i do know the breeder very well and she is happy to do whatever i am comfortable with.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your intended pup. It is always sad to hear that another dog has passed on but somehow it seems worse when it is a youngster.

take care, my thoughts are with you right now.

Karen
