To crate or not to crate

Hi, new here. I am getting my new pug pup at the end of march, I am unsure if crate training is essential (I don't like the idea of it though to be honest). What are your experiences? When do you use them? I'm at home most of the time as I'm a stay at home mum and husband works so would I really need one?? Sorry for all the questions... Total puppy newbie!

Hello Jemma here is an article about crates by one of our members which may be of help to you...

The Crate: What is it? How should it be used?

I'm a stay at home mum too, have never had the need for a crate.Guess it depends,I see you have four kids, not sure how old...I know some people find them useful for a dog as simply a time out space, somewhere they can go for some peace and quiet when needed

A really good, helpful read- thank you. This has made my mind up to get one to help with training and then dispose as it suggests when toilet training is complete.

Thank you for your reply. I have read the article above and the advantages out way the disadvantages and I would only use it whilst training and for him to have a 'resting place'

Our dog has one for the car, which keeps him totally safe and he loves it. He also sleeps in one at night, although we never close the door on him - there is a blanket draped over the top and he looks on it as the ultimate den! Don't be too quick to ditch that crate when training is over because if your dog likes it then it can be invaluable.

My Pugs have crates with crate covers they sleep in them at night and although I'm home during the day, I do go out and Pugs can be demon chewers so for their own safety and my sanity they are crated. They are also crated in the car for their own safety.

I shall see how he likes it then as I don't want to break any routine when he's training/trained as I fear he will get confused. I'm soo excited about being a pug mummy though

They are dear little dogs, and I hope that you have lots of fun and love over the years.
