Glucosamine for dogs.

In the vets yesterday I picked up a leaflet for Synoquin growth to help large breed puppies keep their joints in order while growing rapidly.

I checked with Dillons breeder and she said it would do no harm and her friend has her puppies on it from birth till the day they die.

I know some people use human grade could you please tell me which one and the dosage or where I can research it. I have read dogs need vit c to help absorb the glucosamine.

Useful input gratefully received.

Hi I give Glucosamine and Chondroitin together as they have a synergistic effect.

If you are going to get them separately you should be looking for:

Glucosamine HCl rather than KCI
Marine Chondroitin rather than Bovine Chondroitin

Mine get Chondromax from Healthspan 1 per day

It is difficult to OD on this (unless your dog is a diabetic).

I have been using this for years and all the seminars I have been on re joint health, plus my dogs' physio, osteopath, chiropractic and masseurs recommend both these supplements.

A friend of mine's vet has just returned from a seminar in the US where they recommend that dogs which are involved in lots of impact (such as agility, schutzhund, working trials etc) start on these supplements prior to jumping.

Vitamin C maximises absorption of glucosamine and I give Ester C from Healthspan 1 tablet per day 1000mg any excess is excreted. Vitamin C is also essential for collagen production and joints.
